A service to blogging

Blog looking a little empty recently (the manager's latest fine entry apart) so i thought i'd carry out a public service blog by copying these misplaced entries from Cinqueman in another place.........not too sure how the local community are taking to anybody fingering McCullen's blisters or, come to think of it, anybody called John thumping his Tracy - but i'm sure it can all be explained away at the next committee meeting. Good to see a web link from there to here though....who says we can't get the marketing people to work......

Dad Dancing
Its Official "World has been rocked"Seismic harmonics waves have spread out from Harrow Barrow to other places that rhyme with themselves like London.Perhaps this major ripple has thru convergence lifted Double Waters up and on her journey to the new world. Big plays all round . Lets mention new kid on the block Fingers McCullen who showed me his blisters. Steve Stixxxx as subtle as ever with set list and skins. John our leader in everthing but name and status thumping his Tracy, allowing deprived youths with crewcuts to go bowling so tunefully. As for the light show well The Manager excelled himself.Understated in a stone henge sort of way. Yes I take some responsibility for puchasing a hefty supply of iron oxide but I feel good and I feel its going to come good. Have 110 smackers , had 110 smackers but like the loot that John has it has not been invested unwisely. The second hand oxyacetyline torch is just the job to save magic bus from cremation. Hopefully I can now show link to pictures. Imaginatively Pete.

Dad Dancing
Dad DancingI am back in . I thought Dave was a big hit , better say that as he might read this. We had a fuller sound but perhaps we need to work on light and shade to fulfill our true passion and pace. Have tried to get hold of cheapo lights but our man Roger is elusive and may need them as he is in a proper band now. He is doing a lot for kids bands so good egg really. Dont know how we seemed to have dropped my killers number after all the things I've done .May have got by me this time but I wont get fooled again. Regards Pete. Ps Steve great photies.Bit late?

Dad Dancing
Dad DancingAha , I am reborn , relaunched, relanced really ready to blog. Gone is old Pete thirsty for the holy water , but unable to find it in his massive techno desert, or is that dessert? Nevermind whether I was drowning in semolina or sand, I have been transformed into Cinqueman, a little bit faster , a touch comfier and slightly more leg room .The manager's set is both realistic and within our limits. If we have the chance to add "keep on running "then we have a song to leave to if things turn nasty. The tale of the Lost Mariner/keyboards, backing vocals, lead vocals, bit of tambourine do , sounds like fun of sea without the wet salty bits { unless you count those bits of crisps that escape into the bottom of your beer glass}

Lights, cameras, actions

Yes we saw it all at the annual HarrowBarrowNarrowSparrow charidee gig last week. Pete asked if anyone could think of another place which rhymed with itself. LON-DON came the reply from the floor. Rather worryingly, Pete was impressed with this (but we always knew he had a problem with rhythm).

The lights were on, in a kind of "imagine if these lights were really working" way and it only took about 6 trips to the car to set them up. Boy those lights are GREAT aren't they? From the gloom on stage I spotted several photographers; either we are really exciting or not much of note ever happens in Harrowbarrow village hall - you decide.

As for actions, we rocked around like tigers on vaseline - actually I have decided that I can't rock back and forth (Rick Parfitt-like) and play at the same time without looking like a candidate for sectioning under the mental health act. In fact, now I come to think about it, I can't even stand still and play without looking like a dribbling idiot. But with the huge (admittedly mostly dark) stage area on offer, we took our craft to a new high this week - it took a Herculean effort of self control to stop myself from diving into the mosh pit.

Through the now familiar distorted scream of the PA, I think the fans could pick out a musical moment or two - but we must not sit back on our laurels, or our hardys. Rock is a hard place to be and tonality is at the heart of rock, which in itself is deep within the soil (although it's also true that sometimes it's lying on the soil, or only just underneath it).

So take a spade and dig now for your rock. Or alternatively, try this handy little web test and if you score less than 80% - dig deeper.

Any chords or shall I just use the ones I know?

Looks more like an alcopop to me - geddit? Alco-pop? POP? Perhaps I'll have to work on the "pithy".
Only managed to find the Nick Lowe version of P,L & U on itunes and its a bit C&W and perhaps a bit of a departure for Dad Dancing at this stage in their career - any chance of playing the Elvis C track on Sunday?
Do you need keyboards in Skinheads, Joker, Rockin in the free world, I feel good?
No idea what "the breeze" is.
Presume "Monkley Man" is the Stanley Unwin version.

Thunder...Lightning...Dad Dancing...

And the crowd go wild as DD take to the stage

The media is tearing into us!

I am republishing verbatim a cut from the Plymouth Sound site.

... and Saga-sounds in the shape of the recently-formed Dads Dancing - a bunch of decrepit old men who've opted not to rot, but to rock. Which has to be worth the price of the ticket alone.

1 We were formed before most of the other bands were born (6 years ago)
2 We do the funnies, thank you
3 There is no effing S in Dad Dancing
4 I'm not so sure about the "not to rot" bit; feels like we may have opted for that too.

Dad Dancing

Mariner's Lament.

Improvised intro on cornet.

G C
Coileys going across the sea.
C G
Take a little piece of me.
G D
May you travel wild and free.
D G
You and world in harmony.

Em Am
Must have started as dream.
Am Em
A fantasy it would seem.
Em C
But the dream grew bigger every day.
C D
Until one day then we must say.

Coileys.............

Jed ,Jack ,George will meet Neptune.
And all that hair is going soon,
Those long locks wont reach the harbour,
Look out the equator and the barbour.

Chorus ( bit louder and faster)

Have you heard from Graham and Bridget.
Not Morse Code the website you Idget,
Same as the boat a place you can trust ,
Thats Double Waters not Nautilust.

Etc..........

Write to us say wish you were here,
And if its sunny then no fear,
We'll come flying thru the air,
Supplying M and S Underwear.

Chorus then chorus up a tone to finish.

Not as punchy as WSWDWADS ,so went for slush. Great bash at the home of R'n'R, with or without feedback.

Wont get fooled again

Yes its daring , but replacing vertigo with this anthemic number is a winner . Is it match fit I hear you ask? What I say is you cant defend against pace and passion, and this song has both in spades. The Coiley boys have only dared to say what the nation was crying out for , drop vertigo from a great height , from the dizzy position at the top of the team list to the second eleven. Lets play WGFA in the first eleven at eleven.
Bit worried we are on stage 2 which seems to be reserved for community acts designed to get relatives in thru the gates. Never been my scene, much .

Dad Dancing

Return of the Daddy.
Thanks to The Manager I'm back via a long unpleasant trip trying to work out who I am.Atleast who I am to contribute in a modest way to Dad Dancing Blog. I did try setting up my own blog while tripping of into webspace and changed my identity to cinqueman , a mutant part dad part small disposable car. But its good to be back as plain Pete.
The Lost Mariner shanty and "Park and Ride", sound good . If we have the chance to do "Keep on running " as an exit number then ok , but my earlier suggestions of trans generational trans sexual ,I mean trans gender ,do I ? now seem both unrealistic and more than we could really manage.

Mariners lament

Hey guys, I know you are feeling thoroughly gigged out, but it would be great to have a final garden get-together before the intrepid Coileys sail into the sunset. We are happy to offer up our garden as a venue, unless there are better offers around. Possibilities are 22/23 July; 29/30 July or 12/12 August - it could be either Sat or Sun. What do you all think? Particularly B & G who we know will be v. busy fitting up their schooner.

Set list July 2

Here it is - comments required to confirm or dispute. "Should this be an interactive audience participation thing" asks Pete? Whaddaya think? I have my own (currently private) thoughts on the matter but I want to hear from you good bloggies out there.
Run time is 30 minutes which means keeping inter-song rambling to a minimum (oops just let out my private thoughts there).

To the baying chants of "Dads Dads Dads Dads" as the dry ice mists dissolve to reveal the Dads - pumped up and splendid in Stadium Rock attire.
Steve hits the first of many snare shots and John utters some incomprehensible Spanish as the Dads light up Tavistock with...
Vertigo (3 mins)
There is no time for snat chat because Mark hits the "power peddle", folds his fingers into an E chord and stutters straight into:
20th Century Boy (3 mins)
A wild and ecstatic crowd can't believe they are here to witness this; the Dads reach an option point YOUR VOTE COUNTS HERE:
Either Mark deselects the power peddle and strum-shuffles the opener for
Take your Mama Home (3 mins)
Or...
Rock takes hold of the band and they retro-pogo off to..
American Idiot (3 mins)

It's hot but they're happy - Pete bellows "Are you feelin Guuurde?" - "YEAAAAH!" comes the retort.
I Feel Good (3 mins)
As the last of the chords ballallang in their ears, there is no mercy - Steve Leads straight into:
Rocking in the Free World (4 mins)
A lightened up down-shifted run through the 3 chord sequence just before the 3rd verse gives Pete a chance to intro the band, the final chorus descends into a Dads "signature" power ending. Smoke is seen to be pouring from the nostrils of some small children standing near the PA
Mark hits the Southern Blues peddle to usher up
The Breeze (3 mins)
Pete gets 20 seconds to ask "are you warmed up yet?". Just enough time for Steve to ready his crazy tom roll into...
Peace love and understanding (4 mins)
The big guitar & drum finish (signature 2) drops to silence, John gets the "dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dee, dum, dum" riff straight in his head then leads the Dads into...
Be My Girl (4 mins)
Segue! Pete gargles out the last ghhuuuurrrrl only for Mark to crash the opening chords for
Teenage Kicks (3 mins)

The crowd erupt, large dogs defecate spontaneously, the Dads have left the stadium.

Wake up and smell the options

I said I would blog and blog I have blogged.

The picture says it all - last night was a wake up call. There are two paths to follow:

One path is the route to a rich, ripe, full-cheese glory. The other path is not...

We need commitment and courage, but I know we can do this.

We should not chose the Cheese route because it is easy; we should chose it because it is hard - although admittedly not as hard as say Parmesan, but we certainly shouldn't be as soft as Cottage or Brie, somewhere beyond Farmhouse Cheddar but with rich blue veins is where we should be aiming.

Heed the wakeup call.

Smell the pungent odours.

Prepare for the journey.

Easter Blegg

I have a chocolate thing going on today (and for the rest of the week I suspect). My fingers will get fat, which is all the better for those phat power chords.

This image is the our new publicity shot, taken on the French tour of 2004. Now we need to get a suitable backdrop (I'm thinking heavy velvet to dampen the power) and we're away.

Happy Easter

Nearly overwhelmed with joy

Friday lunchblog:
The band have now spent a whole week out here in cyber-ville and as Pete says, it feels good (Oww! watch that opening G Pete - or is it a D? bassdoc'll know). We're now very nearly as hip as Gorillaz; just need to work on our animated cartoonz. Dad Dancing Baboonz is probably as far as we've reached but it's early days.

Sustaining the cyberblogsphere should now be a priority for the band - just behind table football, the avoidance of power ballads, discussions about "great ideas to spice up our stage presence", continual questions about where the fee money has gone, but way, way ahead of rehearsing.

So I am moved to say in a Dad like way (do you like how that scans?) that I'm chuffed - and that reminds me of one of my favourite spoonerisms:

We used to have a nursery rhyme tape back in those old Pre-Primary school days (you remember tape don't you? No? Oh well) . One of the songs on that magnificent oxide-brown twin-spool technical wonder was called John Brown and it had a line that spoonered brilliantly:

From the proud full "John Brown puffed his chest out" into the trouser burping "John Brown chuffed his best out". (OK so it's not perfect spooneration, but it still amuses me).

I really don't know why I suddenly thought of that, perhaps it's this cheese sandwich I'm eating?

Keep on blogging in a free world my friends.

PANIC!

The Dad's are currently competing to be the most under-rehearsed band in the South West with 6 new numbers to learn in the one 2 hour session. The new calendar system only helps to highlight the problem and tensions are mounting with the big summer season looming. Where has the commitment gone? Have some of the Dad's sold out?

Dad's Arty

A famous Cornish artist captures the essence of the Dad's; Mark restringing his guitar live on stage after yet another "sorry" moment as the G string goes kertwangy-snap.

Keeping his fingers clear of the 240v distribution would probably have left his hair slightly tidier.

Note how both chins are clearly visible

Studio Time

Graham handles some power synth chords on "White Queen" the final track of the Dad's seminal album "unshaven".

Fortunately the baseball cap was completely out of fashion at the time of the recording (unless you were a William Hague) and therefore judged to be suitable Dad-attire.

The dads go wild at the Summer of Love festival July 2001.

Al is just out of shot - and now out of the band.

The war paint was a great idea until we saw the photo.

Younger than he looks

Pete gets instructions on how to plug in an electric guitar. He's advised that playing through headphones will achieve the best sound for the band. Due to his "chew-gum and walk at the same time" affliction, which results in hugely offset vocal-to-strum timing, the new guitar has never made it to a gig.

Maybe the '06 season Pete?
